Accessibility of Services
How accessible are certain services in Tacoma?
Skills used in this analysis:
- ArcGIS Network Analyst Extension
- Service Area Analysis
- Routing
Mobility is a huge determining factor in whether or not people can get to work, go to school or access certain services. In communities where vehicular ownership may be lower, access to services via walking is important.
The following maps document the locations of fire stations (emergency services), WIC retailers (retailers of supplemental foods available for WIC benefits), and residential treatment facilties (drug and alcohol treament). To determine who, demographically, has reasonable access to services, furthur analysis with census data is recomended.
Fire Station Service Areas
Service area analysis was conducted to determine a 5 minute and 10 minute driving distance FROM each of Tacoma's fire stations. The resulting analysis shows gaps in service area. Areas not within reasonable driving distance of a fire station may have to wait longer for the arrival of emergency vehicles

WIC Retailers Service Areas
WIC (Women, Infants, Children) is a government program that offers supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding promotion and support for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
Analysis using "walk time" shows which neighborhoods are within a 5 minute and 10 minute walk from a retailer that accepts WIC (in this case, WIC supplemental foods).
